What happened

Daquan Antonio Westbrook, 18, was shot and killed by off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Thomas Ferguson at Northlake Mall on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2015. Police said two groups with a history of conflict began fighting inside the crowded shopping center and that Westbrook discharged a firearm. Ferguson heard shots while working at the mall, approached and fired at Westbrook, whom officials said pointed a gun toward him. Westbrook died near a store entrance; shoppers fled as officers secured the area. His family and community were left to confront the death of a teenager amid holiday shopping. The armed confrontation is the official police account; an internal and criminal investigation followed, but a later officer prosecution was not confirmed in the reporting reviewed.
