What happened

Calvin McKinnis, 33, was shot and killed by a New Orleans police officer along Chef Menteur Highway on December 14, 2015. The Orleans Parish coroner identified McKinnis and reported a gunshot wound to his rear and another to his back; one bullet passed through abdominal organs and his heart. Those anatomical findings make the direction and sequence of shots important questions for reconstructing the encounter. Police opened an investigation into the circumstances, but the reviewed WDSU report does not establish why the officer fired or document a final charging decision. The coroner's evidence is distinguishable from any assertion by officers about perceived danger; no unsupported claim that McKinnis threatened officers or that the force was justified is added.
