What happened
Javario Shante Eagle was killed by Chattanooga police in Tennessee on December 12, 2015, following a call from a person making unusual demands. Police said Eagle was armed inside a home with a small child and repeatedly refused to comply with commands. Authorities reported he came outside holding the child while brandishing a knife and a firearm. The child escaped and officers moved to secure the child; the department said Eagle then advanced toward them with the weapons, prompting fatal gunfire. The child's safety and the reported possession of weapons are central to the encounter. An Associated Press report documented the police version and the opening of an investigation, but did not establish a later independent legal disposition.
