What happened

Charles Edward Rosemond Sr., 56, was killed in his Taylors, South Carolina, apartment on December 10, 2015, after Greenville County sheriff's deputies forced the door while responding to a reported robbery or assault. Officers believed someone inside might be injured. Rosemond, who investigators later learned had himself been the victim of a robbery, reportedly fired at the entrants, wounding Deputy Dave Dempsey in the head. Another deputy fired and Rosemond died from a wound to his leg. The family's lawsuit questioned both the deputies' entry and the medical aid provided after the shooting. Subsequent reporting said the deputies were cleared and the county settled the family's civil claim without admitting liability. Identifying Rosemond as the earlier robbery victim is essential to understanding why he may have perceived the entry as dangerous.
