What happened

Carlumandarlo Zaramo, 46, was fatally shot by a Richmond Heights police officer in Ohio on December 6, 2015, during a welfare check requested by his wife. Police said Zaramo had threatened suicide but initially cooperated and agreed to go to a psychiatric hospital. While gathering clothes from an upstairs closet with two officers present, he reportedly retrieved a handgun and shot one officer in the chest. The second officer returned fire and killed him. The injured sergeant survived. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation reviewed the shooting for referral to the county prosecutor. That the officers were responding to a mental-health emergency, and that the situation initially appeared cooperative, are important to understanding how the visit escalated; the gunfire account is drawn from the department's investigation.
