What happened

Darius Smith, 18, was killed by Atlanta police on November 30, 2015, after a vehicle pursuit through downtown Atlanta. Authorities said an officer tried to stop a Jeep, the driver fled, and the vehicle crashed near a hotel. Smith, a passenger, and driver Isaiah Irby then ran from the vehicle. Police said Smith fired at the pursuing officer and was fatally shot near the Aloft Hotel on Ted Turner Drive. Investigators reported recovering guns, cash and suspected narcotics, while Irby was arrested on separate allegations. Smith's death and the location were documented in contemporary Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporting, but his alleged gunfire is a law-enforcement claim, and the review did not identify a final independent criminal judgment concerning the officer's use of force.
