What happened
Steve Dormil, 27, was shot and killed by Fort Pierce, Florida, police on November 19, 2015, after officers responded to a child's mother reporting an attack inside an apartment. Police said they found Dormil on top of five-year-old Olesia Doug, holding a knife near her neck, and shot him after he ignored commands. The child was transported to a hospital but died. Subsequent autopsy reporting established that Olesia died from strangulation, a significant distinction from the police gunfire that killed Dormil. St. Lucie County sheriff's investigators examined the deaths. Both Olesia and Dormil should be named in the account, while the officers' description of the encounter must be attributed to the investigating agencies rather than presented as findings of a completed criminal trial.
