What happened

Darick Napper, 34, was fatally shot by a Metropolitan Police Department officer at Clay Terrace and 53rd Street NE in Washington, D.C., on November 19, 2015. Federal prosecutors reported that Napper approached a police cruiser holding a long knife and bladed brass knuckles. The officer requested assistance and reversed to create distance, then got out and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. Prosecutors said Napper advanced and threatened her before she fired one shot into his chest. The U.S. Attorney's Office reviewed civilian witnesses, forensic evidence, radio transmissions and an autopsy, and announced in June 2016 that it would not file local or federal criminal charges because the proof did not meet the required standard. That decision reflects a prosecutorial finding, rather than a trial verdict.
