What happened
Marcus Deon Meridy, 44, was shot and killed by Michigan State Police during a November 18, 2015, standoff at the American Inn in Benton Township. Authorities said Meridy abducted his estranged wife from the assisted-living facility where she worked, holding her at the motel while police negotiated. After approximately an hour, state troopers said Meridy fired at them; one round struck a trooper's protective vest. Two troopers each discharged six shots, striking Meridy nine times. The woman survived. Berrien County Prosecutor Michael Sepic reviewed police reports, forensic records and the autopsy, announcing in February 2016 that the troopers would face no charges. The abduction and reported exchange of fire are the authorities' account, while the prosecutor's decision is a documented legal outcome.
