What happened

Lamontez Ardelbert Jones, 39, was fatally shot by two San Diego police motorcycle officers in the downtown Gaslamp Quarter on October 20, 2015. Officers Scott Thompson and Gregory Lindstrom approached Jones after reports that he was interfering with traffic. Jones fled and police said he turned and pointed what appeared to be a handgun; officers fired twice during the confrontation. The object was later identified as a replica pistol. Both officers said they had not activated their body cameras, although bystanders recorded parts of the incident. The district attorney declined charges, finding that officers reasonably believed the pistol was real. Jones's mother filed a wrongful-death claim contesting the shooting.
