What happened

Corey Jones, 31, a South Florida drummer and housing inspector, was killed by Palm Beach Gardens Officer Nouman Raja on October 18, 2015, while waiting beside his disabled vehicle on an Interstate 95 off-ramp. Raja approached in plain clothes and an unmarked van without clearly identifying himself. Jones legally possessed a handgun and, prosecutors argued, believed he was being attacked by a stranger. Recordings contradicted key parts of Raja's account. A Florida jury convicted Raja in 2019 of manslaughter and attempted murder; he received a 25-year prison sentence. Palm Beach Gardens later agreed to a $2 million civil settlement with Jones's family. The convictions are established criminal findings, distinct from the department's original justification for the shooting.
