What happened

Kaleb Alexander, 25, was killed by Columbus, Ohio, SWAT Officer Barry Kirby outside a Noe Bixby Road convenience store on October 15, 2015. Police said they stationed officers near the business following two recent robberies and confronted Alexander while he was allegedly attempting a third. Officers said Alexander had a weapon and disregarded commands to put it down; Kirby fired the fatal shot. A Franklin County grand jury declined to indict the officer, and in January 2017 the Columbus firearms review board found the shooting within police policy. Those are documented decisions on criminal charging and departmental policy, though they do not require treating every initial police assertion as independently adjudicated.
