What happened

Jason Day, 40, was killed by a Lawton, Oklahoma, police officer after calls about a person displaying a gun at motorists on October 12, 2015. Lawton Police Chief James Smith said officers arrived and had a brief encounter with Day before a shot was fired. Day was taken to a hospital and died. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation independently opened a review and said it would submit its findings to the district attorney; the officer was placed on paid leave. The available Associated Press account does not establish Day's precise movements or a final charging decision. The original reports of gun-pointing are the callers' and department's allegations, rather than proven findings about every moment of the encounter.
