What happened
Junior Prosper, 31, a Miami taxi driver, died after Officer Anthony Martin shot him near Interstate 95 on September 28, 2015. Prosper had lost control of his cab and crashed near an on-ramp; witnesses initially believed he needed medical attention. Martin approached as Prosper walked toward the highway, and the two struggled. Martin said Prosper bit his finger and threatened his safety, prompting him to fire. Prosper's widow Edeline disputed the necessity of killing her husband and sued under federal civil-rights law. In 2021, the Eleventh Circuit affirmed summary judgment granting Martin qualified immunity, reasoning that the limited, blurry surveillance footage did not contradict the officer's account sufficiently for the claim to proceed. That ruling is a civil legal outcome, not a criminal conviction.
