What happened

Tyrone Bass, 21, was shot and killed by a St. Bernard Parish sheriff's deputy at St. Bernard Highway and Andres Street in Chalmette, Louisiana, on September 15, 2015. Louisiana State Police said deputies encountered Bass and that he struck one of them in the head with an object. Another responding deputy fired the fatal shots. Later reporting described the object as a railroad spike; the initial account did not identify why officers approached Bass in the first place.
