What happened

Tyrone L. Holman, 37, was shot and killed by Kansas City police after an approximately 12-hour standoff at a condemned house on Monroe Avenue on September 9, 2015. Deputies had arrived to carry out an eviction and reported seeing him with a gun. Police evacuated nearby homes as negotiators worked to secure his surrender. Officers said he repeatedly threatened to shoot them and detonate explosives, then emerged holding what appeared to be a grenade; the device was reportedly not live. His family said Holman had schizophrenia and took medication for it, raising the significance of the mental-health response. The account comes from contemporaneous reporting and the department's statements; it does not establish that every threat was independently verified.
