What happened

Mansur Ball-Bey, 18, was shot and killed by St. Louis police on August 19, 2015, during an operation involving a search warrant in the Fountain Park neighborhood. Officers said Ball-Bey fled an address associated with the search and pointed a gun at them. His relatives and their attorneys disputed both his alleged presence inside the searched house and whether he was armed. Community members protested, and police responded with tactical deployments including tear gas. St. Louis police announced in April 2016 that they had sent their investigative report to the circuit attorney; an independent prosecutor review had also been announced. The competing accounts remain central, and a referral for review is not a finding that the shooting was justified.
