What happened

Allen Matthew Baker III, 23, was shot and killed by Sunnyvale police near a Motel 6 on August 15, 2015. Officers went to the hotel following a report of possible prostitution activity involving young women and people arriving in a Jaguar. Police said Baker, from San Diego, pointed a firearm at an officer during an ensuing confrontation, prompting the fatal shot. Investigators also identified other people connected with the hotel call and described separate criminal suspicions against them. The police account of the threat must be attributed to the agency rather than treated as an independent finding. Contemporary reporting established Baker's identity, the motel setting, and the initial investigation but did not establish a later officer conviction.
