What happened
Redel Kentel Jones, 30, was killed by Los Angeles police on August 12, 2015, near Marlton Avenue in the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw neighborhood. Officers were searching for a woman accused of robbing a nearby pharmacy with a knife and located Jones in an alley. Police said she was holding a knife and did not comply with commands before they fired. Her death renewed public questions about police treatment of Black women and alternatives to lethal force. The Los Angeles Times homicide report documents the robbery investigation and police's description of the encounter; these allegations should not be substituted for independent findings about whether immediate deadly force was necessary.
