What happened
Darius D. Graves, 31, was shot by Champaign police Sgt. Colby Oleson after a six-hour standoff at the Rantoul Days Inn on August 4, 2015. Police suspected Graves of an armed restaurant robbery, surrounded the motel, attempted negotiations, and used tear gas. As Graves crawled from his room and then ran, officers thought he carried a gun; the object proved to be a steel pipe wrapped in cloth. An officer fired the fatal shot. Illinois Public Media published police video and interviewed officials; the Champaign County state's attorney concluded the shooting was legally justified. The absence of a real firearm at the final confrontation is a critical detail alongside that prosecutorial finding.
