What happened
Earl Jackson died amid a manhunt following gunfire involving Florida Highway Patrol and other law enforcement near Interstate 75 at Micanopy on July 25, 2015. Local reporting said a state trooper came under fire, and officers later located Jackson's body after an exchange of gunshots. Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell initially said authorities did not know whether Jackson's fatal wound resulted from law-enforcement gunfire or was self-inflicted. That uncertainty is essential: a national fatal-police-shooting dataset includes the death, but the initial evidence described in the reporting did not establish precisely who fired the fatal shot. A conclusive later forensic determination was not verified in the reviewed source.
