What happened
Darrius Stewart, 19, was killed by Memphis Police Officer Connor Schilling on July 17, 2015, during a stop involving a car in which Stewart was a passenger. The family later alleged in federal litigation that Stewart was unarmed, that the stop arose from a faulty headlight, and that he was shot during and after a struggle as he attempted to flee. Schilling claimed circumstances that he believed justified the force. A Tennessee state grand jury declined to indict the officer in November 2015. The Department of Justice, FBI, and federal prosecutors separately reviewed testimony, video and investigative records and announced in September 2016 that the evidence was insufficient to prove a federal criminal civil-rights violation beyond a reasonable doubt. Stewart's family disputed the shooting and pursued civil claims; those claims must be distinguished from adjudicated findings.
