What happened

Salvado Ellswood, 36, was shot and killed by Plantation police Officer Erik Carlton outside a medical office complex on July 12, 2015. Carlton testified that he encountered Ellswood after hearing an argument, ordered him to leave, and fired a Taser when Ellswood charged him. He said the stun gun had little effect and Ellswood struck him in the face, breaking a tooth. After another unsuccessful Taser deployment, Carlton fired his handgun, killing Ellswood. APM Reports examined the grand-jury account in a broader investigation of lethal force after Taser use. The reconstruction relies heavily on the officer's testimony; it should not be confused with independent firsthand verification of every action.
