What happened
Marcellus Jamarcus Burley, 18, was shot and killed by Houston police on July 7, 2015, at a location on Tiny Tree Drive during a reported armed-robbery confrontation. Houston police described an undercover operation involving three young people and said the encounter escalated to gunfire. Officer M. Rivera discharged his firearm, killing Burley and wounding Demontre Gregory Clark and Jalanie Jeanlouis. The police department's July 8 press release identified the two survivors, described their wounds as non-life-threatening and said both faced aggravated-robbery-with-a-deadly-weapon charges. Those charges are allegations against the survivors, not a verdict on the shooting itself. The published material establishes the fatal police gunfire and the police account but not an independently adjudicated final finding about the officer's actions.
