What happened

Jason Hendley, 29, was killed by Los Angeles police on July 6, 2015, after officers responded to a report of a man with a knife and an injured woman at a Sylmar home. Police said Hendley, who appeared covered in blood and held a large kitchen knife, advanced toward responding officers despite commands, prompting them to fire. Afterward, investigators found the body of his mother's fiancé inside the residence with fatal stab wounds. The LAPD publicly identified the involved officers and retained the shooting in its release records. The Los Angeles Times' database of district attorney charging decisions lists the case as resulting in no action against officers. The documented death of another person and the alleged knife threat are necessary context, while the police reconstruction must be attributed to the agency.
