What happened

Tyrone Harris, 20, was fatally shot by Pittsburgh-area officers on June 22, 2015, at the end of a rolling armed confrontation and pursuit. Police and witnesses said Harris fired at officers, stole a vehicle, and continued shooting from the moving car as they pursued him through crowded streets. Five officers returned gunfire after Harris reportedly pointed a rifle at them; Harris died at the scene. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala did not charge the involved officers, and the officers later received recognition for responding to the armed attack. This is a fatal police shooting recorded in national datasets, but the documented gunfire, carjacking and police response are essential to an accurate account.
