What happened
TrePierre Hummons, 21, was shot and killed by Cincinnati police on June 19, 2015, after he fatally shot Officer Sonny Kim in the Madisonville neighborhood. Investigators reported that Hummons had twice called 911 about an armed, belligerent man while describing himself, apparently to lure officers to his location. Kim responded and was shot in an ambush. A second responding officer, Thomas Sandmann, exchanged gunfire with Hummons and shot him; both Hummons and Kim died. Contemporary reporting describes the death of the officer as well as Hummons and the authorities' interpretation of the incident. His inclusion in a fatal-police-shooting archive should preserve the crucial context that a responding officer was killed during an armed confrontation, rather than depict the incident as an unarmed or routine police stop.
