What happened
Kris Jackson, 22, was fatally shot by a South Lake Tahoe police officer at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on June 15, 2015. Officers had responded to a report of a woman screaming inside a motel room. Jackson, who was unarmed, was shot as he moved through a rear window; his family disputed the police explanation and filed federal civil-rights and wrongful-death litigation. Jackson died after being taken to a hospital. Years later, the city and Jackson's parents reached a $4.5 million civil settlement, announced in February 2023. The family's attorney characterized the shooting as excessive and unjustified. The settlement is a substantial documented outcome, although it is not by itself a criminal verdict against the officer. Contemporary police statements and later civil allegations should be distinguished in describing what occurred.
