What happened
Demouria Hogg was asleep or unconscious in his car near Lake Merritt in Oakland, California, when police responded on June 6, 2015. Officers reported seeing a firearm on the front seat and spent approximately an hour attempting to wake him. Police said Hogg moved toward the weapon after officers broke a window; one officer used a Taser and another fired two rounds, killing him. His family filed a wrongful-death lawsuit alleging excessive force. Oakland's own annual city attorney report confirms a $988,753 settlement related to Hogg's death, and police-accountability materials later scrutinized the tactical decisions involved. The civil settlement is documented, but does not constitute a criminal conviction of the officer.
