What happened

Kevin Allen, 36, was killed by Lyndhurst police inside the town's public library in New Jersey on May 29, 2015. Police said they recognized Allen as someone wanted on a contempt-of-court matter related to a work-release program. Officers followed him inside the library and confronted him on the upper floor. Chief James O'Connor said Allen tried to flee, became violent, and produced a knife before officers shot him. Library patrons, including a child, were reportedly present; the building was evacuated. Bergen County prosecutors investigated the shooting. Contemporary reports document the officers' account, witness concerns, and the traumatic public setting, but the reviewed sources do not establish a later conviction or final civil judgment concerning the officers' actions.
