What happened
Javoris Washington was shot and killed by Fort Lauderdale police during a reported domestic-disturbance and hostage incident on May 21, 2015. Police said a SWAT team went to a residence where a woman was believed to be held against her will by an armed man. Officers said they attempted to calm Washington before his actions led them to believe the woman faced imminent serious harm. They then fired, killing him. His sister confirmed his identity in contemporary reporting, and authorities said they would rely on toxicology testing rather than assume reports of drug use were established facts. The police department's account of the perceived threat is an allegation made by officials; the reviewed reporting does not establish a final judicial determination of the officers' use of force.
