What happened
Twenty-one-year-old Jared Johnson was killed by New Orleans police during an armed-robbery response on April 28, 2015, at a Dollar General store on Chef Menteur Highway. Prosecutors and later reporting said Johnson and two accomplices attempted to rob the store after closing, prompting a silent alarm. Police surrounded the business. According to authorities, Johnson was fatally shot after he tried to leave through a rear exit and turned to point a gun at officers. An internal police review later determined the officers' actions were justified; body-camera footage was publicly released in March 2016. In 2019, the surviving accomplices pleaded guilty to robbery charges. Their later guilty pleas do not independently determine each contested detail of the shooting, which must be evaluated on its own evidence.
