What happened

On April 27, 2015, a multiagency fugitive-apprehension team entered a Detroit home looking for 20-year-old Terrance Kellom. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent assigned to the task force shot him, reportedly ten times, while Kellom's father and sister were inside. Police said Kellom threatened the agent with a hammer. His family disputed that version, saying he had been brought downstairs and shot while kneeling; relatives and reporters also challenged claims that he had fallen through the attic. Civil-rights advocates demanded an independent investigation and reforms to task-force oversight. Kellom's estate and relatives later brought federal civil-rights and wrongful-death litigation involving the federal agent and Detroit officers. Court opinions record the lawsuits but should not be mistaken for a criminal conviction or an adjudication of every allegation.
