What happened
On April 24, 2015, Trinidad police shot and killed 20-year-old Todd Jamal Dye inside a vacant trailer in the Almar Trailer Park, Colorado. Police were dispatched on a trespassing complaint. According to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation account, Dye initially obeyed an officer's direction to get down, then stood, moved away and pointed a loaded gun toward the officer. The officer fired; Dye died after being taken to a hospital. Investigators reviewed video from the officer's body camera. In June 2015, Third Judicial District Attorney Frank Ruybalid concluded that the shooting was legally justified and closed the criminal review; the officer was identified as Ron Arlint. The official decision documents the prosecution's conclusion, but does not erase Dye's death or the importance of independent scrutiny of force during a police response.
