What happened
Mya Hall, a transgender woman, was killed on March 30, 2015 after a vehicle approached an entrance to the NSA campus at Fort Meade, Maryland. Authorities said the vehicle did not follow officers' instructions at the restricted-access gate and security officers fired at it. Another occupant survived. News and LGBTQ media reporting drew attention to the fact that Hall's death initially received limited coverage and that early reports misgendered her or emphasized a stigmatizing narrative rather than her identity and life. Describing the incident from the viewpoint of a security agency is not equivalent to a complete reconstruction of Hall's intentions or the officers' necessity to shoot. Her case also raises the issue of how transgender victims of state violence are represented in news reports and national databases.
