What happened
On March 22, 2015, police were responding to an apparent robbery at a 7-Eleven at the corner of Scott Boulevard and Monroe Street in Santa Clara. Officer Craig reported encountering Devin Gates near a red Ford Focus in the lot and gunfire. Multiple officers arrived, and investigators documented a revolver near Gates's body. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office later prepared a detailed shooting report with officer interviews and physical evidence. That report is an official account assembled in a prosecutorial setting, not a substitute for the views of Gates's family or an adversarial determination. The narrative, photographs, diagrams and timing in the report are appropriate grounds for further scrutiny of the force used and the circumstances that led to his death.
