What happened

Multiple people called 911 after seeing Anthony Hill walking around his Georgia apartment complex unclothed and visibly distressed. Officer Robert Olsen arrived in a patrol car, and Hill ran toward him with his hands out. Olsen stepped out, drew his pistol and fired twice, killing Hill. Hill had no weapon. Family members and veterans' advocates called attention to how a welfare situation involving a mentally distressed person became fatal. Olsen originally faced a murder prosecution, and the litigation continued for years with substantial changes to the legal disposition.

Investigation & findings

Olsen was convicted of aggravated assault and other offenses in 2019, but the Georgia Supreme Court overturned that conviction in 2024. On May 28, 2025, Olsen entered a negotiated guilty plea to aggravated assault in connection with Hill's death. Record the 2025 plea as the current resolution rather than treating the 2019 verdict as still intact.
