What happened
On February 23, 2015, police responded to reports of burglaries at homes in Millbrook involving a group of teenagers. During the encounter, an officer shot 16-year-old A'Donte Washington three times. A PBS NewsHour investigation later interviewed his father, Andre, who remembered A'Donte as an energetic son with aspirations of playing college football. The death also exposed Alabama's felony-murder law: other teenagers in the group were prosecuted for the police shooting that killed their companion even though the fatal bullets came from an officer. Authorities said A'Donte carried a gun; that claim and the broader burglary allegations do not change who fired the fatal shots. Family members questioned the resulting death and the legal treatment of the surviving youths. The record is important for both the fatal use of force and the expansive criminal liability imposed on other young people.
Investigation & findings
A grand jury declined to charge the officer. Related felony-murder prosecutions continued; Jhavarske Jackson entered a plea in 2017. Distinguish those prosecutions from the officer's shooting decision.
