What happened

On February 3, 2015, St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers attempted to approach Ledarius D. Williams near Minnesota Avenue and Meramec Street. Police said the 23-year-old ran and officers chased him into a narrow passageway, where they located him behind a bush. Officers alleged that during a subsequent struggle Williams produced a handgun and turned toward them. An officer fired four shots. Williams was transported to a hospital and died. Local reporting documented the official version but did not provide an independent account confirming each movement alleged during the confrontation. The killing occurred in a city already facing intense scrutiny of police violence. Public reporting also noted Williams had survived being shot by another police officer years earlier. The available record does not establish that an independent authority resolved the disputed use-of-force questions.
