What happened
Lauderhill police confronted Demaris Turner in Broward County on January 23, 2015 while responding to information about a stolen vehicle. According to accounts attributed to police, Turner drove into or rammed a marked patrol vehicle containing an officer and a police dog. A detective then fired at Turner, who was taken to Broward Health Medical Center and died. Local contemporaneous reporting repeated authorities' description of the car as a weapon. The readily located reports do not supply an independently established account of Turner's intentions, the exact sequence of gunfire, or a final public prosecution outcome. He was 29 years old. His case illustrates how a police shooting arising from a vehicle stop may be described chiefly through the officers' initial statements when little independent evidence is available.
Investigation & findings
