What happened
Chesapeake police received a report of a man who might be suicidal near Sir Gawaine Drive on January 14, 2015. When officers found Mario Jordan, 34, he was reportedly in the road with a rifle. Police alleged he fired toward an officer and the officer shot him in return. Jordan was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. Local reporting quoted people who knew him and described his distress before the police encounter. The initial purpose of the police response was a crisis involving potential self-harm, not a trial or a determination of guilt. The available published summaries do not establish what crisis-intervention resources were requested or provided before officers fired. The police version of the gunfire should remain attributed to police until supported by an independently reviewed account.
