What happened

Officers Jeremy Doverspike and Dan Peck responded to a 911 report alleging Marcus Golden had been sending threatening messages. They located him in a parked SUV on University Avenue. Police reported that Golden refused instructions and drove his vehicle toward an officer, leading both to fire their handguns. Investigators said a loaded handgun was found within his reach, although contemporaneous accounts did not say it was fired. Golden's grieving family and the St. Paul NAACP sought an independent investigation, and the death reopened discussion about St. Paul police use of lethal force. His relatives emphasized his life and their family's recent loss of another son.
