What happened

Late on January 7, 2015, New Orleans police officers stopped a pickup truck near Josephine and LaSalle streets. Omarr Julian Maximillian Jackson Sr. was driving. Officers questioned the three occupants and asked Jackson to get out. Jackson ran from the stop, after which officer Michael Bencik shot him. Police said Jackson fired a gun first, an account the department repeated when it released body-camera footage in March 2016. Jackson's mother objected to public release of the recording. The footage's existence did not make the officers' interpretation beyond dispute; the public record includes the department's account and its internal review. Jackson's obituary records that he died on January 8, leaving behind his wife, children and a large extended family. That death date differs from the January 7 incident date retained in this sheet.

Investigation & findings

New Orleans police cleared the involved officers following an internal investigation, and the district attorney declined charges, as reported with the March 2016 release of body-camera footage. The family's concerns about publication of the recording were also reported.
