What happened
Two NYPD officers approached a group of young men outside a Brooklyn home after a gathering. They shot Kimani Gray, a 16-year-old, seven times in his arms, legs and torso. Police alleged he pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it toward them; family members and neighborhood witnesses contested that account and questioned whether the recovered revolver had been his. His mother Carol Gray and community members protested the shooting and demanded an independent investigation. Medical examination found entry wounds on both the front and back of his body, but the pattern alone did not resolve exactly how he was positioned as each shot was fired. The incident sparked several nights of demonstrations about excessive policing.
Investigation & findings
The Brooklyn district attorney announced in July 2014 that no criminal charges would be brought against the officers. That decision is not a factual resolution of the family's disputed account.
