What happened

Officers Miguel Masso and Joseph Fesmire stopped Alan Blueford and two other young Black men near 90th Street and Birch Avenue in Oakland late on May 5, 2012. A pursuit followed and Masso shot Blueford, who died early May 6. Officers alleged a weapon was involved; the family's lawsuit argued Blueford had dropped an object and posed no imminent threat when he was shot on the ground. The lawsuit also challenged why police stopped the teenagers in the first place. A federal judge found factual disputes significant enough to reject the family's request for partial summary judgment on the initial-stop claim. Blueford's parents continued pushing for transparency and police accountability.

Investigation & findings

Oakland agreed to pay $110,000 in 2014 to settle the federal civil-rights lawsuit. The court's denial of a partial summary-judgment motion was not a factual determination that all officer conduct was lawful.
