What happened
On November 8, 2010, Oakland officers responded to a domestic-violence complaint in East Oakland and approached Derrick Jones at his barbershop. Jones ran and was pursued by Officers Eriberto Perez-Angeles and Omar Daza-Quiroz. The officers shot him after asserting they saw him reach toward his waistband and produce a metallic object, which turned out to be a small electronic scale rather than a weapon. Family and neighborhood witnesses disputed the necessity of the gunfire and described seeing further shots when he was on the ground. Jones's mother and supporters demanded independent investigation, pointing to the gap between the threat officers claimed and the object actually recovered.
Investigation & findings
Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts asked the FBI to investigate whether federal civil-rights violations occurred. The Alameda County district attorney's case review recorded officer statements and available evidence; a referral or investigation should not be presented as proof that criminal charges were filed.
