What happened
Sean Bell, 23, was leaving his bachelor party at a Queens nightclub hours before his planned wedding to Nicole Paultre when detectives conducting an undercover operation fired more than fifty shots at the vehicle carrying Bell and friends Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield. Bell died; Guzman and Benefield were wounded. Detectives said they thought someone was armed and feared a threat involving the vehicle, but no gun was recovered from Bell or his companions. Bell's family and community activists questioned the extraordinary volume of gunfire and policing decisions that turned a wedding celebration into a killing. The case became a major test of NYPD accountability and sparked widespread public protest.
Investigation & findings
Three detectives charged in connection with the shooting were acquitted in a bench trial in 2008. Bell's family and wounded friends also pursued federal civil-rights litigation. Criminal acquittals do not foreclose describing the civil claims or the documented excessive number of rounds.
