What happened
Green, a 34-year-old Black former steelworker, was struck repeatedly in the head and face with heavy metal flashlights during a confrontation with police. The fatal injuries and the fact that officers were accused of abusing their authority became the subject of three simultaneous criminal proceedings that attracted national attention after the Rodney King beating.
Investigation & findings
In August 1993 juries convicted former officers Larry Nevers and Walter Budzyn of second-degree murder. A third officer, Robert Lessnau, was acquitted of a lesser assault charge; later appellate proceedings require checking for complete final dispositions.
