What happened

Hamza al-Dahdouh, an Al Jazeera journalist and son of journalist Wael al-Dahdouh, was killed January 7, 2024 by an Israeli strike on a vehicle near Khan Younis, Gaza. Freelance journalist Mustafa Thuraya, traveling with him, was also killed. Their deaths devastated a family already mourning other relatives killed during the war and prompted journalists' rights organizations to call for an independent investigation into attacks on members of the press.

Investigation & findings

CPJ documented both deaths and reported the circumstances of the strike. Claims advanced by Israeli authorities concerning the journalists should be distinguished from independently verified findings.
