Police Violence / Individual records
Police Brutality
Accounts of Black people killed, injured or otherwise harmed by police, with reporting, official records and the findings of investigations.
The people in the record
The records follow police encounters and what happened afterwards: deaths, assaults, injuries and nonfatal incidents. Names, locations, agency accounts and investigative findings are linked to their sources. Incident dates and dates of death are shown separately when available.
Historical fatal-shooting entries draw on The Washington Post’s Fatal Force database, which requires at least two sources and editorial approval for each published entry. It covers shootings, not every kind of death involving police. The records here are not a complete count of Black people killed by police.
